About

cataldo copyIn my artwork I try to evoke emotions from the scene. That emotion may come directly from the image I captured with the camera, or I often use Photoshop, watercolors, a dark room or other tools to enhance what I’ve captured. I use both digital and traditional film cameras in my work, depending on my goals for the project.

As a certified California Naturalist, I spend a lot of time observing the intricacies of the natural world. My fascination with mammals, birds and urban and rural landscapes is clear in my work. I tell stories about environments and their inhabitants, documenting the interactions among species, whether they be sandhill cranes at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge or people in the streets. My goal is to capture the individuality of each living thing and how it interacts with others and its world.

With common natural histories in mind, I begin with my camera in various places and, like a detective, try to discover the characteristics and mannerisms that we all share. From there, I use tools to help extract that meaning or emotion from the images I capture.
